January's NPD sales saw a bit of a shake up, as the post holiday hardware hangover hit Nintendo and Microsoft particularly hard. That lead to an atypical second place finish for the PlayStation 3, which outsold the Xbox 360 and Nintendo DS. February, however, sees a return to form, with the DS and Wii nabbing spots one and two, respectively, absolutely killing the competition. Just imagine if they could keep some of these things in stock...

Fortunately for Sony, the PlayStation 2 picked up the slack, selling an extremely impressive 351,800 units. As expected, and forewarned by Microsoft, the Xbox 360 trailed it's console competition, showing in second-to-last place. The full hardware numbers are after this.

* Xbox 360 - 254,600
* PSP - 243,000

Total hardware sales for February were at $480 million, up from the previous year which saw $402 million for the month.

NPD analyst Anita Frazier says, "I was most surprised by the PS2 hardware sales numbers this month. While it certainly has earned its spot among the now-gen slate of console systems because of it staying power in the marketplace, the fact that it realized such significant growth this month is really a testament to its broad adoption and the response of consumers to promotional activity at retail."

Wow, 360 almost got outsold by 3 different Sony consoles. Almost a Triple Whammy. Gotta love how Microsoft gets the excuses ready about short supply and this and that.

Meanwhile any store I go to I see tons of 360 consoles available.

The Playstation 2 has got some serious legs. Rightly so though, it's cheap and has loads of great games. The DS and Wii are both monsters, I wonder what odds you would have got a couple of years back on Nintendo winning the console war this gen. Not just winning it but absolutely destroying the competition. I'm thinking about picking up 'No More Heroes' today for the Wii, anyone played it? As for the 360, It's lowering sales are to be expected, It's a couple of years down the track, It's febuary, and it's userbase is already big. Microsoft will have a poor March too, April should be better with the release of GTA 4 (although this will boost PS3 as well) and there's a price drop coming I think, in Europe at least. Good numbers for Sony, PS3 is picking up steam, probably down to Blu Ray and a general image turn around.

Im glad to see Nintendo back on top. i thought the Wii was going to mediocre at best.

i still cannot believe they are making new games for the PS2.

I think the Blu-Ray victory helped the PS3 a lot this past month, the PS2 keeps on rocking and are people still that interested in the Wii?

When it comes to software, 5 out of 10 of the best selling games are on the X360, not even the Wii can mess with it. Wii has too many crap games and the PS3 just needs games.

Considering these are America only numbers, PS3 Devil May Cry sold really well. It would be handy to know what games placed in from 10-20th place. Great numbers for Lost Odyssey, I'm not sure it will have legs though, I once again have faith in the human race after it outsold the abysmal Turok. Sad that a game of Mario Galaxys immense quality has already slipped out of America's top ten. Next months obivous prediction; Smash Bros destroys everything.

and you failed to mention that 4 out of those 5 games are also available on the PS3. Of course 360's version is gonna sell more, but these aren't games that are all exclusive.

I just can't believe the PS2 monster....still going strong 7 years later. Unbelievable.
