Icon14 New York, New York!!!

To all you NYC heads (and NYC fans/lovers/former residents/etc),

I've been living here in Manhattan for the past 4 years and am going to be moving away this June. Seeing as I have only half a year left to enjoy this awesome city, I'd love to get some suggestions regarding "can't miss" things that I should do/try/experience before I leave.

I'm looking for things more along the lines of "Be sure to eat at the Shake Shack when it opens in the spring" rather than "Go to the top of the Empire State Building," if you know what I mean.

Thanks a lot guys.

The Off Topic forum had a thread about it a while ago that had some restaurants mentioned that sounded good.

Try Spankys BBQ on W. 43rd between 6th & 7th. GREAT food and a good atmosphere.

as a manhattanite on a budget, i enjoy what the city has to offer that can be consumed for free or nearly free

if you HAVEN'T been to the empire state building then you really SHOULD go! for that matter, you should get a map of famous NYC architectural landmarks and plan a walk for yourself.

some other suggestions

1. eat/walk around in chinatown
2. eat/walk around in little italy
3. go to a free concert at lincoln center or any of the other venues that have free concerts
4. go to st. patrick's cathedral
4. when the weather gets warmer go to the public garden on the northeast corner of central park
5, for that matter, cover as much territory as possible in central park on a nice day
6. go the cloisters
7. go to the Metropolitans (museum of art and museum of natural history); two of the best museums in the world and admission is "pay what you feel like paying"
8. go to a "big" movie at the Loews Astor Plaza on 44th.
9. the best vietnamese place I have been to in New York City is NAM PHUONG on 6th avenue just a few blocks below canal. it's inexpensive and the food is excellent. I recommend the vietnamese coffee after your meal.
10. go to the bronx zoo and/or Botanical Gardens
11. Big Nick's Burger and Pizza Joint (2175 broadway, around 77th street) has every diner food you can imagine, the atmosphere is great and it's relatively inexpensive
12. Carlito's is a very friendly bar in Spanish Harlem on Lexington Avenue between 106th and 107th. It is a small, intimate space with a subdued, cozy atmosphere and a hippy kind of vibe, not super-cheap but not overly expensive drinks. there are almost always cute girls there. Tuesday nights starting at 9PM is "open mic night." THere are more than often pizza and good, cheap taquerias in the immediate area to keep you fed for the night. in fact, if you decide on going you can PM me; you never know I might be there myself.

that's off the top of my head for now

You MUST go to Gray's Papayas on I believe 10 Street in the Village.

You could also try Dallas BBQ on 23rd street
