Neurosis: Best band(almost)nobody listens to....

For real. These guys are in a league of their own. I´m not going to try to pigeon hole these guys since their music defies any classification, but there is a good reason why bands like Tool, Mastodon and Isis put their name out there as a strong influence on their development, and the entire post-****l genre owes a lot to their groundbreaking albums, especially Through Silver In Blood.

Neurosis has been putting out extremely high-quality stuff since 1988 with little fanfare and almost no mainstream media exposure, and they are one of those rare bands that manage to walk that fine line between sticking to their guns and gradually improving their craft. The also seem to get better with every album, building on what has gone before. Their latest album, Given to the Rising is IMO the best ****l album of 2007 bar none.

Given to the Rising promo vid

"Locust Star" off their seminal mid-90s album "Through Silver In Blood". A controlled natural disaster of apocalyptic proportions. One of the high points in extreme music, period.

"The Tide" off the 2001 album "A Sun That Never Sets" Although an edit of an 8-minute piece, this manages to stand very much on it's own. Brutal yet beautiful.

Great band, Through Silver in Blood especially, although I could never really get into the older, more hardcore stuff.

Given to the Rising is quality stuff, though it doesn't strike me quite as much as Through Silver in Blood or Times of Grace. Perhaps it just needs some time to grow on me.

It sounds too agro for my tastes.

In my opinion the best band no one listens to is The New Pornographers. They should be all over the radio but aren't. Simply the best sounding, most polished and listenable songs I've ever heard.

Meh, not enough melody. Dan Swano is the man when it comes to cookie monster vocals with a good sound to accompany it.

Neurosis is a great band. "Through Silver in Blood" was one of the most influential albums in the post-****l genre along with "Oceanic" by Isis.

If you like Neurosis and Isis, you will probably also like Cult of Luna:

It's all good, since when someone mentions Neurosis you can actually say something about the person. Every music genre has these benchmark bands and it's fine with me if they stay sort of underground (Meat Beat Manifesto or Aphex Twin for electro, Zoot Woman for pop, Mastodon, Meshuggah or Decapitated for ****l and so on).

I hated most everything they put out post 'Through Silver with Blood'. Tribes of Nuerot wasn't bad, though.
