nerd thread warning** if this was the future...

lately i started playing star craft again after all these yrs since isaw the trailers on yt for sc2(which btw loosk awesome!). and hypothetically speaking

this is the year 2500:man kind is united and we're all turning our sights to the stars. weve achieved faster than light travel and have colonized many planets; our numbers are in the 10s of billions spread out across the galaxy, and we're generally peaceful. our navies our vast, marine corps are well trained, we've amassed a good army and alot of wealth.

suddenly we get attacked by an alien menace like in starship troopers or the zerg in sc numering in the hundreds of billions. theyre mindless, ruthless and very hungry. they kill millions of our fellow citizens and start taking down our colonies on the fringes of our space, slowly advancing towards beloved earth. would you enlist? if so would you be in the trenches on some god forsaken planet thats almost entirely covered in craters, frantically shooting into the darkness with your trusted rifle? dropping down bombs from the sky in fighters or just be on earth watching the holograms for the latest updates from the front line, helping the homefront thru production of tanks/armor etc?

I would be posting on sherdog which would be nothing but a screen of floated pixels that i would use my fingers to navigate through the windows

As doing this i would be pressing a another touch screen to order the finest woman imaginable to my personal likings and have her teleported to my room. I would do my thing, then send her back.

After that I would goto the bar and eat an alcohol pill and play pool/shoot the shit with fellow alien immigrants and other humans.

with your current post count in 2500 you'd have like 10 trillion posts.. only periodically coming out of cryogenic freeze to post for 2hrs, then going back into the tube.

I have no idea. Way too many factors to consider. It would depend on the society, my place in that society, my family, my physical and mental abilities, the perceived danger of the alien menace, and a myriad of other factors. I might.

If you are interested, the book StarShip Troopers is about a thousand times better than the movie. It deals with these issues of who goes to fight and who stays back to post on sherdog. Only those who serve the State can become full citizens. Great book.

Another book you might want to check out is The Forever War. It too postulates a future time when humanity is strong, prosperious and generally united, and we meet an alien threat. The war drags on "forever" because of the nature of fighting over such great distances. By the time the ship from one nation has traveled that far, the other nation has advanced hundreds of years (special relativity time dilation) and the attack is thwarted and they launch a counter attack. Thus the war never ends.

ive read starship troopers! great book. i like how ricco is philipino in the book. im not philipino but its good to see that everyone is equal in the war against the bugs in the future + the book was written like 50yrs ago when there was still alot of racial seperation. you gotta admire heinlin for that. that other book you mentioned sonds excellent. ill have to check it out. i like these dark sci fi novels where the future isnt bright and friendly, and everyone is wary of war.

fair enough,

society would be like in sc or stt: almost a slight dictatorship, but everyone still has rights to life liberty, privacy and voting. sort of like today. everyone is equal and there is a huge emphasis on the military (like in stt) with say around 70 percent of the population having been in the military at sometime. your position in society wold be whatever stage you're at now.
if you ask me, id enlist right away as some poor unfortunate grunt. ive already enlsited in the army reserves in RL and once im done college, im going to go to officer school and do a 5yr full time stint. can wait till im done with school..
