Music-creating software?

I'm pretty computer-dumb, expecially when it comes to software, but are there any programs around that I can use to make my own hard rock/industrial music with? If it's downloadable freeware, that would be great, but I'd also consider making a purchase.

My workout mp3 playlist is getting kind of stale, and nothing else out there seems to interest me. I figured I'd make my own tracks to work out to. Vocals aren't really neccesary, but screamin'/wailin' guitars and a heavy beat are.

I only have experience with a music generator "game" for Playstation1 that I messed with years ago. Can anyone recommend something similar for PC that I can burn onto CD or convert to mp3 format?

i dont think any good freeware for actually creating music exists dude.

look at the programs Logic, Reason or Cubase, however they're all expensive as fuck and fairly involved to use, this is what a lot of people who actually produce music for a living use, but u can edit tracks and create music from scratch

If you can get a hold of Fruity Loops you might enjoy that. I dont recommend downloading anything for free, because well...thats just illegal. But if you have $150-$400 to spare, i suggest FL. My brother had it running for a while. He only did hip hop beats but he was pretty good at it. I just fooled around with it to make DnB, but i didnt have the patience for it. Its some in depth software.

I had the old Music Generator for the PS1 as well back in the day, i had damn near a whole Cd's worth of songs made. For a PS1 game, it was incredibly detailed with what all you could do with the single notes. I loved that game.

Cubase, Fruity Loops and Pro Tools are good to start with.

Before you go crazy, do some research. DON'T BUY ANYTHING YET. Check the torrents and steal Cubase, Reason, etc. If you find you're musically gifted and like the software, then you should think about buying it. Also, if you want to get serious, you will probably need to pick up a little bit of hardware, which is where the real cost lies.

Sony Acid is the best. But, it costs money (used to be like 30 bucks, dont know how much the new version is). Alot of Pro's use Acid.

What do DJ's that are into house music use? I've been interested in fooling around with some stuff for quite sometime. I just haven't had the opportunity to sit down with one of my DJ friends and ask them what they use.

i know with Acid you can record live instruments. So if you wanted to hook up some turntables, keyboards, guitars etc. and connect them to the computers sound card and record everything on a track. You can chop up the recordings and place them whereever you wanted on a track. If you have drum samples in a sound format like .wav on disc, you can put them into acid and make beats and what not.

The ones for PC that everyone has mentioned are pretty cool. I prefer a Mac and Garageband myself. It's very easy to use, yet very powerful. I'm yet to find something musically that I'm not able to do with it. You can arrange music (via midi), program drums, record live instruments, mix, and export the songs to audio files to burn to a CD or convert to mp3. Get a $400 Mac mini and you've got yourself a recording studio.

I love this attitude. "I don't like the music around at the moment, I'm gunna make my own". Ha ha.

How much to get started?

Can anyone with a love of music do it?
