That's the delicate balance filmmakers must strike when illustrating characters. Richard Jenkins did A LOT with what little he had; and it seems to me such is his M.O. He always plays bit roles but, like an iceberg, his performances suggest so much more than what is seen.

I think that had we learned MORE about his severance from the Greek Orthodoxy, we would have been less sympathetic with him. He's already a bit of a loser, and disclosing what transgressions he committed would have made him an asshole loser. That would not be right for his character.

Interesting point, however; I don't think the evidence points to a transgression or wrongdoing on his part. Nor do I think there is a "severance" involved. If he had a large severance surely he would have offered a loan to Lindsey for her surgeries in light of his romantic interest in her?

Irrespective of the scripts intent Jenkin's character expresses in his small part something much deeper then getting laid off. The implication in my opinion is that he left the clergy of his own volition rather than breaking a rule. Perhaps due to the drinking, or perhaps it would have to do with his loneliness - may I propose a loss of faith and turning to alcohol in light of a spouse's death? **SPOILER ALERT** His part is so small on this stage of players and yet I would have liked to know a little bit more about his past what would make his character become so pathetic? It would have given more impact to the scene when Malkovich kills him. But then again perhaps it was the point the mindlessness of fate and the pathetic end to a pathetic man's existence? LOL.

Sorry, I did not mean "severance" in the getting paid sense of the word. I think he was forced out due to some mistake he made while drinking.

Saw it; was "eh". I'd give it a 6.5.
