Been thinking a bit about this recently. Big guys in sports, especially ones with divisions, are often labelled as slow and unathletic compared to their lightweight counterparts, and often in said sports people tend to watch the small guys for speed, athleticism and skill, and big guys for strength and power. However, now and again, you do get a big guy in some sports that kinda breaks the mold and embodies a lot of the things the small guys do with the exception of being huge, making them very successful in their field.
Can you guys name or posts some sports pics of some of these big guys in action. I think basketball might get a lot of mentions but its kinda out of place as (although I know hardly anything of basketball) its my thinking that you need to be tall to be a big star in b-ball. American football may have some, guys who play the positions usually reserved for small speedy guys but are big.
The ones I automatically think of are
- Jonah Lomu, New Zealand rugby prodigy who had a blazing career in the 90's before health problems forced him out. 6'5, 130kgs, could sprint 100m in 10.5 seconds. Devastating.
- Alexander Karelin, the greatest wrestler of all time. not much to be said here, strong as an ox but also fast and athletic in a division often occupied by huge fat guys!!
- Shinichi Shinohara, Japan's heavyweight judo star of the 90's and early 00's. 6'6 and 135kgs, but as dynamic and fast as a lightweight with crazy athleticism for a big guy. Long stry behind this photo, one of the worst moments in sports, hes in blue and throws the guy in white, only for the ref to call a score against him.
- Lennox Lewis, another huge guy who fought like a guy much lighter and added such an array of punches to the standard HW's arsenal that he has a long reign and fought off comp from all sides. Seen here fighting Frank Bruno of England who he beat in Rd 7 I think.
There must be many many others, who takes your vote as the most athletic big guy of all time in any sport?
