6 years in the air force, because I knocked up girlfriend and have family history of military service.

I was married, so the experience was different for me. It was definitely worth it.

My best advice is this- if you are going to enlist, work your ass off. If you work hard and keep up to the PT/Dress/military bearing standards, you will have respect, be given more responsibility, and upper ranks will trust you more and they'll have your back if you get into trouble.

Have been in the USMC since 1998. Have been to:

All over the US
Canada 1 time
Japan (Iwakuni mainland) for 3 year duty station.
Korea 2 times
Thailand 3 times (about 7 months worth of time!!!)
Malaysia 1 time
Philippines 2 times
Guam 1 time
Afghanistan 2 tours
Kyrgistan 1 time
Ireland 1 time

Some of the highs (best times) include going to Hiroshima every weekend and having straight up fuck fests with multiple Japanese chicks and Being only a few hours away from going to a Pride FC event. Visiting Miajima Island, Japan. Fucking the shit out of my gf (ex) about 4 times a day during Cobra Gold 2002 and 2003 in Thailand. Going to Kabul, Afghanistan and seeing things that changed the way I thought about life. Seeing the Twin towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia up close. Yeoungsan, Korea RSO & I Computer war game training in Korea where I only had to work about 4 hours 3 days a week while the rest of my time was spent screwing the shit out of some Army guy's Korean girlfriend while he was on vacation. AHHH good times.

Some of the lows (worst times) include being an average looking guy while stationed at Camp Lejuene, NC with no car and the guy/girl ratio is about 10 to 1. Sweating my ass off in the 120 degree heat of 29 Palms. Freezing my ass off on the flight lines of Bagram, Afghanistan. Getting air sick in helicopters and puking into my kevlar helmet (from Bagram to Salerno). Getting sea sick on an LCU and puking over the side so hard that mexican rice from an MRE that I just ate was coming out of my nose.

I have had fun times and hard times in the US Military. Would never trade those times for anything.

That is pretty much the same thing I have heard from friends who have been in the military. Overall, would you say that most of the people you have dealt with over the years were pro's (integrity, at least trying to be exceptional etc...) or have you had to deal with a lot of jerkoffs (criminals, crazy people etc...)? Could you explain it in a number (ie: 1 out of 100 is crazy, 25 are serious pro's, 49 are just average dudes, 15 borderline retarded and 10 useless fuck-ups)? The people I know who have recently left the military are exceptional people, but I can't tell if they are the standard in the military.

That about sums it up. There were many, many times that I hated life and everybody around me in the Marines... but I'd go back and do it again in a heartbeat and I never regretted it for a second. There is really no way to describe that level of brotherhood to someone who hasn't lived it. No doubt in my mind those guys would have taken a bullet for me. I still talk to two of my buddies from the Marines all the time and I'm in less regular contact with almost my whole old platoon. We did some very hard things physically and mentally, and we partied our government issue asses off all across the world.

It's hard to put a number on something like that. I was in the infantry, most guys were average type dudes, but the common denominator was that quitters were to be despised. You never gave up on something hard or let your boys down. Intelligence wise, it ran the gamut. Mostly normal, plenty of very smart guys, some people so fucking stupid you can't believe they find their way out of their rooms.
