United States Army 97-00
MOS - 63T - Bradley Fighting Vehicle Systems Mechanic
I signed up while I still in high school. My thinking at the time was that I wanted a break from school, I needed money for college, and I was hoping I might get to see some of the world.
High Points - I got out of my home town. I made a couple of good friends. I was briefly stationed in the middle east, which proved to be an interesting experience. The Army College Fund made it possible for me to attend college and independently support myself at the same time. And... I met a few nice ladies.
Low Points - Getting stationed at Fort Stewart, Ga. (so much for seeing the world). Communal living (3 to a room) sucked ass. I was put in more than one dangerous/life threatening situation because of leadership failures. And... I met a few shitty ladies.
Overall - I'd do it again. The high points are still pretty fresh in my mind, and the low points are either largely forgotten or now simply laughable. Since getting out of the army I have earned two college degrees and had a couple of different careers. Those are things I truly believe I would not have accomplished had I not been in the army.
I have never been one to endorse the military. I didn't join out of some desire to serve or out of some innate patriotism. I joined for myself. Fortunately, things worked out pretty well for me, but everyone's experience is unique.
If anyone who reads this does decide to join or is just thinking about joining the US Army, here are a few simple tips to being a "good soldier" - be on time, be clean shaven, and always have on a pressed uniform. It is mind blowing how many people can't get those right.

Ditto. If you can do those things, and have a great PT (physical fitness) score, you'll be "Golden" and have a great career.

Interesting, I seem to always find threads when I have things on my mind. I just turned 19 a month and a half ago and lately have been finding trouble seeking motivation to do anything with my life, nothing interests me besides training, competing, playing guitar and women. Most of those will not lead to a successful career anyway, I am currently going to school just in general studies but im bored with it and nothing seems to catch my interest so ive been thinking about joining the Canadian Army (don't laugh). Brother is a Marine in England, Uncle was in the Army.. Just a thought of what I might do considering I could use the training and really need a change, I love to travel and train and would love to get paid for it and I love testing myself. Just ranting... good thread.

I joined right out of High School in 1988.
11 Bravo (Infantry) and 11 Hotel (Tow Gunner).
I initially signed up for reserve duty. 8 years but after two years I was activated and deployed to serve in Operation Desert Shield. I was discharged in 1996.
Highs:
Travel (Germany, Alaska, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait)
met and made lifelong friends
got into the best shape of my life.
Lows:
Broke almost every day
lied to by elected officials
zero realistic training for the real world incompitent people in positions of power
little to no sleep (average 3-4 hours a day)
Having a good friend of mine die in field training exercise accident
