Mayberry Book Club: An experiment in online socioliterary activity.
Alright so that Cormac Mcarthy thread got me thinking that a Mayberry Book Club would be a pretty neat idea. There are obviously some well-read members, or at the very least open to the idea of exploring literature; accordingly there are many of us who are capable of enjoying a good book, but put it off and miss out (I haven't read for pleasure in multiple years outside of the 15+ books I read a year for school). A Mayberry book club would allow people to find out about works they might not otherwise have picked up, be forced via social pressure to read, and give a more formal outlet for people to share their literary experiences on a consistent basis.
I've never been part of any book club before, so we should plan out the format and tally interest before going forward. Being the summer, it is better to get started now before the doom and gloom hits post-LaborDay. I was thinking we try to allot time for reading at the pace of around 150 pages per week, followed by a thread discussing the book, where a member has to start the thread with some commentary of substance. Nominations for the book, the threadstarter and whatnot must be considered too. If you got this far in my post, I'm sorry I had to use a bunch of big words and pseudogrammatical writing, but I wanted to scare off anyone who would feign interest while being unable to read a mere two paragraphs of description.
Please post if you might be interested in joining the group and/or have any ideas about how to operate the group so we actually get people to read and discuss.

WTF,
I have seen it all now. Just left the Muay Thai thread because of too many homo erotic posts, can't stand the UFC tools, and I find this.
Another insomniac book worm?
Cormac is great. Just finished the Richard Matheson anthology including, I Am Legend, Anthony Swafford's Jarhead & a couple of biographies on Liver Eating Johnson.
How many other people can read on this forum?

I may be interested, will be interesting to see how many responses come back.
Glad I looked for something a little tamer and found it.

I think 150 is a safe number to start with, unless people say otherwise. The goal is not to churn through book after book, but make it manageable enough that people don't start dropping out of the reading altogether if they miss a week of reading.
Perhaps we could do it so that after 2 weeks (give or take depending on the book), the book discussion begins, and readers contribute or discuss for up to a week; that way the fast folks with more time can begin a dialog and let the busier/slower readers have some leeway.

Count me in. In another life I was an English major, and I welcome the opportunity to dust off my critical tools and vocabulary. I will name drop Lacan and Foucault, and many other douche bags besides, and make cryptic comments about literary theory that do nothing to enhance the reading experience.
However, my tastes have coarsened since graduation. Whatever we read should have lots and lots of pictures. And also, steamy sex scenes. And violence, too.
I suggest we stick to short stories.
