The journal says if anything goes wrong, Desmond Hume will be his constant.

I just watched the alternate endings and that really raises a question...
Was this part of the story so fluid that it could be any of three? Or does that forebode that Sawyer and Desmond are going to die or is it that the writers just don't have this as plotted out as we all have been lead to believe?

Desmond was the constant for Farraday.

I think he did not get sick because the island has a purpose/destiny for Sawyer and all the people of Flight 815.
If the heading was the only variable in getting sick, why didn't everyone get sick when they crashed on the island? The plane did not crash on the island going into the jungle as it would have needed to be coming from the heading. but crashed in line with the beach.

They did it so the real ending wouldn't be leaked out, since no one knew which one it was.

no way. how many main characters in lost have died with their actual death not being shown and left unambiguous? it was like 30 seconds between the last we see of jin on the deck of the ship and the explosion.

But how many characters have gotten arrested on Hawaii and not been killed off?
Major to minor characters, no one is still alive after their arrest, that's what the producers/writers do to please the Hawaiian government for the use of their land and resources.

There's a first time for everything. Considering Dainel Dae Kim's DUI arrest and Sun's seemingly vengeful persona in the flashfowards, I think it's safe to say Jin is toast.
