The only reason I'm thinking that is because the guy is nuts, and being so close to the island, I think he's getting crazier with every passing moment. It might've been one of the objectives in the second protocol too. If your life in dangered, blow up the boat and eliminate any evidence that the team was ever there in the first place.

I'm not saying this is what will happen, but it is a hypothesis of mine.

I for one really hope Sawyer doesn't die, since he's one of my favorite characters and I can relate to aspects of his character on a general basis. But his character has evolved so much from simply being out to save his own neck to helping out and putting himself in danger to make sure of the safety of others so much now, that's why I have a feeling he will die.

If it does happen, it won't be because he caught a straw bullet or something. It'll be because he gave up his own well being and safety to make sure someone else gets help or rescued.
