I was hashing out Crackpot Theory #9786 with a buddy, delineating four types of TRAVEL.

LEVEL 1: As broken by Faraday. Rat's consciousness escapes the grips of NOW and is projected into the future. Body stays in NOW, but empty.

LEVEL 2: As engendered "spontaneously" by Island. These TRAVELS masquerade as flashfowards and -backs. However, it is becoming increasingly possible these are not classical literary devices, but willful subterfuge hiding the notion people can TRAVEL. At this point there are two unknowns: whether the TRAVELERS are aware of the TRAVELING or if they are simply regarding it as what is happening "now." Desmond perceives the shift, maybe these other folks, like Kate and Jack, et al., don't. 2nd Unknown: what happens while they're in the future or past? Do their bodies do slack like the rat? Or is it instantaneous?

LEVEL 3: Willfull manipulation of both time/space as mastered by Dharma. This would be the Orchid station. A rabbit jaunted through time, as experimented by dude in video. How did Locke's dad get on the Island? How do the Others get off the Island at will? Richard Alpert?

LEVEL 4: This one is shaky, but the apparitions on the Island. Where do THEY come from?

I believe the Island knows WHAT MUST HAPPEN. And I believe the Island endeavors to keep WHAT MUST HAPPEN happening. Maybe all that is is just keeping people like Widmore from fucking around through time too much. The enemies of the Island are bending events to their own whim.
