Looking for the name of an author

I believe the author wrote stories about war and how the world was going to end and there was a movie loosely based on his books. During WW1 or WW2 some of the tanks that came out were based on descriptions in his books.

On his tombstone it said something like "Damn you, I warned you all" or something of that nature.

Any help is appreciated!

Yeah War of the Worlds was based off of his novel of the same title.

If HG Wells doesn't work out "War of the World" by Ferguson is crazy good. I just started it on Monday and can't put it down.
