I don't know NIN very well but i think its awesome of them to give their album away for free. Is this new album worth a listen for NIN newbs?

Eh, I'm probably one of the biggest NIN fans on Sherdog and I must say the new album is pretty weak. Certianly better than Ghosts and more concentrated than Year Zero but it's not even as good as With Teeth. I give it a (3/5)
which is generous and due to my bias fanhood.

Depends on what you're interested in. It's not a "Bad" album per-se and it might suit you as being a new fan to the band but it's just a bit more watered down and flashy than his previous masterpieces, and since they're giving it away free in good quality, I'd say it's worth the download. There are some really solid songs "Letting You" and "Lights in the Sky" but for the most part it never quites take flight because of filler tracks like "999,999" and "Corona Radiata."

I'm downloading it right now. I heard Discipline on XM and liked it. At least this album has lyrics (even though I like Ghosts).

Ghosts is more of an experiment, I consider it a deviation from the Nine Inch Nails legacy. Not in a bad way just an abstract way. Hopefully I'll appreciate it more in time.

Discipline is alright, reminds me of an Only song, with that really prominant percussion which screams "YEAR ZERO ERA!"

Ghosts might have been received better if Reznor had released it under an alter ego name, sort of like Maynard does.

I'd say I like The Slip better than Year Zero (my least fav NIN record). I still think Trent probably peaked with The Fragile. That being said, for a free album, The Slip is great.
