Icon13 Linguistic Prejudice

Ever been a victim of linguistic prejudice, for example if you use an American formal word in the presence of a Englishman that didnt exist in his regional vocabulary you would receive a smuggish comment, such prejudice occurs especially in pluricentric languages and certain words are branded as archaic which has some form of negative connotation therefore unacceptable.

I once was chatting with an Argentine and I mentioned I spoke some Espanol and he replied with with this look and mentioned he spoke Castellano as to seem sophisticated, I mentioned that I found it interesting that such term Castellano was utilized outside of Spain and that the simple reason 'Espanol' is not used in Spain is because it demeans other Spanish languages such as Catalan, Basque, Galician, etc.

Some people can be smug, pretentious ****s. English ppl call elevators "lifts" and the trunk of a car "dickey". Makes no difference to me.

Lol one time I met a chick from london and apparently there they call cigarettes, "***s." We were hanging out(she was the only brit) and one dude came back inside because he had to smoke. She said, "Hey, you smell like ***s."

We just burst out laughing and the dude was like, WTF. I thought it was pretty funny.

I speak with a slight southern drawl and my east coast friends make fun of me. They make cow boy and farm jokes. The people I know from the west just fucking hate it and tell me to speak like a normal person.

Eh...I don't let stuff like that bother me. I lived in England for two years and honestly most of the people had a good time with my words. Especially most of our American names, which usually meant something to them...lol. People that get hung up or insulted about that stuff (when it's not intentional) must have an awfully mundane life.

I"m from the Anthracite Coal Region and we are not great speakers. I have to consciously think about speaking well...if I"m in front of a group or whatever. To this day most of the time I say "slippy" instead of "slippery"

Lozano :
Actually "Espanol" is used in Spain and "Castellano" in Argentina, and it has nothing to do with sophistication or Catalan/Basque/etc. It's just the usage there.

The English are notoriously much more intolerant when it comes to differences in the speaking of the English language than are Americans. This intolerance is even more evident amongst the English themselves, or even worse throughout the UK/GB.
IMO the English just need to chill out and bite their tongues sometimes when it comes to making snoody remarks. Especially when it comes to correcting others who in actuality are speaking a dialect of a language which no longer holds a standard bearer.
Having said that, American English is actually the most widely accepted and studied dialect of English. So who's infallible now? ; )

OH, and I think 'victim' is being a little hyper sensitive.
