Hawaii

I randomly starting thinking about picking up and moving from Indiana to HAwaii after I graduate college next year. Obviously I know its an amazing place but is it more of just a vacation spot than a good place to live?

BTW Ill have about 60k and no loans at all at that time. The only thing that might hold me back is leaving my family and friends behind..

Just checking if anyone else has done anything like this?

I lived there for over 4 years. It's a horrible place to live.

I've considered doing this. If I find a job over there I honestly might do it. I've stayed there for nearly a month on both Kauai and Maui and I loved it. The cost of living is a little higher, but not really that much more than where I've lived in California. If you don't have any bills you'd live decently with around $22 an hour or so. But that's renting not owning.

It is kind of humid which brings a lot of incects(roaches) and lizards around but it's still worth it IMO. If you like the big city then stick to the big island. If you like a less crowded area then Kauai would be ideal.

Stupid locals, too small, too expensive, too isolated, horrible job market. It sucks after about 6 months.

Too expensive. Hawaii is only good for a brief 3 week stay if youre training BJJ with BJ Penn or something.

There are huge differences in perceptions of hawaii in terms of being a "local" and a "haole" (outsider/foreigner). Acceptance by the local population will, unfortunately, stem from how long you've been in the islands. I'm sensing that much of lubaolong's derision of hawaii stems partly from this. But then again, I'm slightly biased as I was born and raised on Oahu. But irregardless, I find Hawaii people to be much more genial and friendly than, say, people here in LA. But the job market is fairly selective and real estate prices are rising (but then again, aren't they mostly everywhere?) For me, the matter of moving back to Hawaii after I get my bachelor's degree, and possibly PhD, is without doubt because I love the beach, the women (imo hawaii girls are without equal), and the food.

What type of jobs are you looking for?
Where are you planning on living? Island, city, etc...
What kind of accomdations?
If you tell me I might be better able to answer your questions.

I don't think you'll have that much trouble finding a job position like that. Of course I don't have very much experience in that department or anything, but my mom is a public school teacher and she says they're always looking for new teachers/teaching assistants. And the good part about being a teacher is that at the very least you'll have the respect of the parents and your neighbors because education is becoming more important in Hawaii, especially primary and secondary.
And of course there's tons of beaches within driving distance wherever you live. It sounds like you'd be more suited for living on Oahu, where there's more cities and towns and a higher population density than the other islands.
