This is weird. I'm working on a different book at the moment, and I just finished using the Galileo quote in your sig about half hour ago! It cracked me up to see it again here on sherdog.

would you mind adding some info about how you initially got published? what kind of process you went through sending material to publishers, any contacts you had, etc.

Honestly, I was really lucky. I had published the first edition of the book in Italy (that's where I'm from). After moving to the U.S., I googled a guy named Richard Strozzi Heckler who wrote several books on philosophy and martial arts, because I liked his stuff. We started e-mailing back and forth and I sent him some translations of my chapters, and he liked them a lot. Next thing I know he has shown them to his publisher and his publisher is asking me if I want to translate the whole book into English and add a few chapters. So I really owe it big to Heckler and to plain, dumb luck.

It includes two extra chapters. The first is about spirituality in combat sports. Typically, the martial artists who emphasize spirituality are traditionalists in pajama talking too much and not sweating enough, whereas most combat sports enthusiasts are great when it comes to action but not exactly renowned for intellectual depth. This chapter discusses how both sides are missing something, and on the need to take the best from both. The second chapter is the thing I've written I'm most proud of. It's somewhat of a more personal piece about the main reasons that push me to train day in and day out. It sports the unlikely title of "On Failed Friendships, Martial Arts, Nietzsche, and Self-Perfection".
I'm glad you liked the first edition! By the way, in which library did you find it?
