I don't feel he does. He's not imposing, he's not sympathetic (that can be attributed to his lack of any acting ability), and he's only funny in the sense that it's funny how so many people think he's so great.

His best film in terms of fighting, story, and acting is Rumble in the Bronx. I have to give him credit for that because that's a solid film.

Like I said: I respect him as a stunt man (everybody, fan or not, should check out that documentary of his "My Stunts") but his fight scenes are dumb, his films are weak (The Tuxedo? Give me a break), and he's a terrible actor, so bad that it detracts from the story. He ruins any and all punchlines and it's impossible to take him seriously in the least.

As for his fight scenes: I don't want "fun" fight scenes. I want fight scenes. I hate watching him hopping around and doing somersaults and flipping furniture and doing all of that stupid shit. If stuff like that is mixed in with serious fighting (e.g. the apartment fight in Rapid Fire) then I can tolerate it, but THAT'S ALL HE DOES.

I'm comparing his fight scenes to those done by other martial artists. You watch the fight scenes in Bruce Lee movies, Jet Li movies, Brandon Lee movies, Steven Seagal movies, hell even JCVD movies and they're much better.

And for the record: Arnold versus the Predator>Any Jackie Chan fight.

He takes himself seriously because he generally plays serious characters in serious films. He doesn't need compound his idiocy by making a mockery of himself and his martial arts the way Jackie Chan does.

Jackie Chan wishes he could've done something as great as the Once Upon a Time in China trilogy or Kiss of the Dragon. It's a good thing he refused the bad guy part in Lethal Weapon 4 and we got to have the better actor and the better martial arts star in Jet Li play the role.

Meh, its all subjective. I feel Jackie Chan brings something different to the table and he definitley has a loveable charm and enthusiasm. Sure he has never done roles with the depth of say Jet Li in 'Once Upon A Time In China' but neither Li nor Lee have done anything that is pure comedy gold like 'Project A'. Sure 'The Tuxedo' sucks but Jet Li's career isn't all masterpieces by any means. Jackie Chan has some decent movies, 'Police Story', 'Rumble In The Bronx', 'Snake In The Eagles Shadow', and Drunken Master are all great fun.

Well, to be fair, Bruce Lee didn't have the time to amass a real resume.

And I agree that it's subjective. I may look for different things in martial arts/action films than other people, and of the things I want in a martial arts/action film, none of them are fulfilled by Jackie Chan (and not always for a lack of trying).

Add that to the fact that he actually turned down a role because he refused to be in a film where he wasn't the good guy everybody is supposed to love and cheer for and it's very hard for me to like him and want to watch his films.

I respect him as a stunt man, I don't respect him in the least as an actor, and I think he's overrated as a martial arts/action star.

Yeah man thats fair.

I'm a huge Bruce Lee fan but the guy couldn't act. An unbelievable man and martial artist but his acting was not his strong suit by any means. But as you say, he barely had a chance. I just think you have to be some sort of cynic to not appreciate 'Project A', its one of my favourite martial arts movies ever

you gotta watch some of his older films to really appreciate him. you can say his fight scenes are stupid and dumb but thats what made him popular. ppl like him becos of that. he has his own unique style its not your typical martial arts film. are you really expecting to see an mma fight in his movies? he wants to entertain his fans and hopping around and flipping around might be stupid but to a casual fan they'd think thats awesome. come on now its a movie. jackie deserves all the respect. he puts his life on the line doing death defying stunts for the sake of entertainment. i don't even know how many times he escaped death.

sonny chiba is the best, in terms of him as an actor and the characters he plays, but i would say jackie has the best fight scenes and overall the best movies.
