Ive been pondering this

Lets say you have a dog that you raised since it was a puppy and you grew up together. Its the best friend you could ever have.

If this dog and a some random person you never met were drowning (or dying in some other way) at the same time, who would you save. You can only save one.

I would go for the person who I dont know. As much as I love animals more than humans, I still think that the life of a human is much more important.

I agree. Although I'd miss my dog a lot more. I think the move to save your dog would be a selfish move because it makes you happier. The moral obligation is to save another human being.

I have no allegiance or relationship to the drowning man. My dog is my best friend.

I value all life equally so I would actually save the dog. I wouldn't cry if the man drowned, but I would if my dog did.

Lets say that the dog cant save itself. They might not be drowning, they might be trapped in some burning and you only have time to save one. Its a hypothetical situation man.

Doesnt matter how old the dog is. It can be any age you want. But would it make a difference how old your best friend is.

Doesnt have to be a dude. It can be a baby or a cute chick or an old lady. Just a random person.

Im guessing some people not change their decision based on the gender or race of the person. So lets say its too dark or something and you cant really tell how old or what sex and race the person is.

It would rip my heart in shreds but I still think I would choose the human over my dog.

Most people will save the dog.

Look how much rich countries spend with pets while millions are starving in africa and asia.

Humans have a tendency to hold grudges and seek malicious revenge and blame/punishment when it comes to 'wrongful death'.

Dogs on the other hand will love and forgive you till the end no matter what... lol gotta love 'em!

It's amazing how selfish people are when it comes to saving another life. Basically everyone is calculating what they get out of it (who will be MY better friend, who would sue ME, etc.).

I can't speak for the OP, but the decisions I'll probably have to make today are trivial and don't define any of the characteristics I would be most proud or ashamed of in myself. Coming up with a hypothetical question like this is a way of checking your own conscience and system of ethics in a way that it probably won't be checked by the mundane occurrences in life. Some people are interested in what they find when they are forced to answer these types of questions.
