I did this once (for a computer that needed win 98 but the principle is pretty much the same) and it worked so I hope it also works for you. First I got my self a bootdisk(
www.bootdisk.com) from the internet for win 98, inserted it so I could get in Dos and then I gave the command format c:. If it's correct it should start formatting. When that's done restart the computer and insert the windows cd. Search for the driveletter and acces the cd so you can see it's files. For win 98 you first type "cd win98" and then "setup" and for XP you first type "cd i368" and then "setup". From that point the installation will go automaticly.
After reading your post I understand you haven't formatted it yet. Smart move because now you can see what drivers you need. Go to my computer->properties->hardware manager and you can see all the devices in your computer and the drivers they need.
Hope it helps(since it was a while ago I did it)
