I'm such a noob at computers

My sister has this computer thats about 5 years old. Overtime, it has accumulated so much shit and now its so freaking slow! It takes forever to boot and open stuff on windows. I was going to format the computer and reinstall windows XP. But then, I realized I don't know how. I know I sound stupid but can someone tell me?

Make sure and set the bios so that it reads the cd before going through the normal routine.Hopefully it is already set that way.

I did this once (for a computer that needed win 98 but the principle is pretty much the same) and it worked so I hope it also works for you. First I got my self a bootdisk( www.bootdisk.com) from the internet for win 98, inserted it so I could get in Dos and then I gave the command format c:. If it's correct it should start formatting. When that's done restart the computer and insert the windows cd. Search for the driveletter and acces the cd so you can see it's files. For win 98 you first type "cd win98" and then "setup" and for XP you first type "cd i368" and then "setup". From that point the installation will go automaticly.
After reading your post I understand you haven't formatted it yet. Smart move because now you can see what drivers you need. Go to my computer->properties->hardware manager and you can see all the devices in your computer and the drivers they need.

Hope it helps(since it was a while ago I did it)

Make sure that you still have the valid cd-key for your license of XP before you do so...

In terms of drivers - XP should do a decent job of getting the basic stuff working for you... The most important thing, IMO is having the drivers for you network card (or modem) so you can jump on the web and get the other drivers XP may miss.
