You could talk about experiencing how American culture is abosrbed and adapted by others. Japan is very Americanized in many places, it's interesting as hell to be so far away from home but still be there.

In that case, you can mention that one of your many interests in Japan is the cultural and social changes that occured in the shift from the imperial era to the post-war era.

then again, I'm a history nut, so when I visit or learn about a country, I see it through a historian's eyes.
