know one knows 10 million people. thus, 99.9% of those people are strangers and people don't care about strangers.

moreover, 10 million is too abstract of an idea. who can conceive of 10 million particular things? what does that look like?

10 people you can relate to. you can think about their families and their lives.

10 million people is beyond comprehension. and so all those people become mere statistic.
