if i remember correctly, initially it only came out for pc. and it was very popular in europe. which caused the co to try an american release on playstation. the playstation version came out sometime in 98 maybe even 97.

the game always had popularity, but the third one for ps2 redefined gameplay. and many games after gta3 followed the same gameplay style.

Yeah, the first gta games were mainly driving games with an above action view, like Sim City. That all changed with GTA 3.
