I'm suprised at the shitty pay you guys get as security guards. I've been looking at jobs a lot in the last few months and i always see security jobs advertised. Usually they are offer $20+/hour...In fact i can't remember it being below about $17/hour. I live in Australia BTW. I've noticed that security guards love to interact with people, which gives me the impression that it's a bloody boring job - but we all knew this anyway.

Aussie guards get paid very well, however they have less rights than a fish. The legal system over there is pretty bad (towards guards).

Another forum I check in on is a security forum, and one of the people there is an aussie guard who called the cops on some some people doing drugs on his site (he works in a parking lot). anyways the people ended up getting the guards information, and where he lived and all that jazz through the cops and legal system. they ended up beheading his dog in front of his kids who were 5 and 8 at the time. the real kicker? they couldnt get charged for it for some reason.

Best security is resort or hotel security though. I worked hotel security for a while and it was an absolute blast. one of my favorite parts about security are the absolutely retarded stories you get to tell afterwords. A hotel gives you alot. I had a bunch of 15 year old ringette girls try to get with me, their parents constantly tried to get me drunk during my shift, i heard a guy screaming "fuck my ass" and i clearly remember him coming into the hotel with a woman meaning they were likely using some freaky sex toys haha. ive seen people have strip shows in movie theaters.

sadly though since a guard is meant to see the bad things when they happen you should see other stuff which is not as good. ive seen fires, fights, KOd people, fat chicks trying to flash me... worst though was a rape. I didnt actually see it since it wasnt during my shift or on my site but outside the building i was working in a girl got gang raped in the winter after coming out of a bar. worst part is the company that patrols that area (Response, for anyone who is in Ottawa) should have had a guard on the exact location of the rape due to the vantage point it gives of the area they were to secure. somehow they just got back into that contract, im nearly certain they lost it for the last 4 months.

If anyone gets into security through this thread and wishes to stick around for a bit, please ensure that your site offers guard the Right of First Refusal. as said earlier there are some major fuck ups that get into this industry because honestly its very easy. these people tend to be the reason that contracts are lost with companies. First Refusal lets you stay on site even if your company gets dumped because you will just end up getting transferred over to the new company coming in. same pay, benefits and all of that jazz.

Being a bouncer is a lot easier then security i should think. I made $16 per hour and got to drink on the job as well (the owner of the club would just randomly bring me free beer). Plus there is plenty of drunken female attention if you work at certain places

Just like Nihil wrote earlier, S/O get no respect from the public due to the fact most of the public thinks security gets paid minimum wage. I used to work for a Department of Public and Social Services and you wouldn't believe how many welfare receipiants used to tell me I wasn't shit while I was pulling in $15/hr and they were standing in line for a $221/month check. Talking big like they are getting over on the County when they have to jump through hoops to get their food stamps. You just have to find a spot that pays well and is as far away from the public as possible. I was cool with dealing with people because I laugh at shit on the regular anyway but if you don't have patience stick to graveyard shifts on empty lots.

haha. i've seen some ads for bouncers stating they wanted fuckers 6 foot 250 lbs. Seeing that im not close to half that weight and height, i'd think people would just laugh.

yeah, i mean people can call security bland all they want, but i overall think i'd have a good time witnessing stuff like that, beside all the gang rapes. It'll make for some good laughs and wacky stories.

From what you guys are telling me, i've came to the conclusion that i'd much rather be security in a nice busy place like a hotel, casino, bar. Where shit will at least stay interesting. I dont think i have the psyche to man graveyard all alone.

hotel work is absolutely hilarious and is also usually in house so you will get discounts around the world on hotels (great perk if you love to travel) however you need to find the big chains for this.

any place where there are alot of people you will have a story at least once a week worth laughing about with friends. my current site isnt very funny because its mostly tech guys and such, however when i worked hotels and movie theaters, oh man did i ever see some wild wild shit haha. the parking lots and empty places can be good if your into catching people fucking. ive heard countless stories of people being caught fucking while the guard was patrolling. as long as its near a city i can pretty much guarantee you that you get to catch people at least once every 4 months.

i really enjoy the job because i meet new people all the time, and i have possibly the best boss ive ever had. another great gig if you can get it is working at sporting arenas, around here there is a company called Capital who does all the Ottawa Senators games, essentially you get paid to watch the game since nothing ever happens at Sens games.

Again though I would like to stress that this job is either a LOVE IT or a HATE IT. There really is no in between.

not much chance of getting a 9-5 job ... if your lucky you might score something but not likely... most shifts swing like days and afternoons.

the pay is only about 9 (lowest) to about 13 (high end) bucks an hour but most guards will tell you they make somewhere in the middle like 11 bucks. most malls will pay you about 12 - 13 same with up scale condos.

security can be a great job if you want to study at the same time... there are many sites that are quiet and you can use that time to study... this is most true if you find yourself in the graveyard shift.

if you are in canada looking for a security job you can either get your security license afetr you get hired or you can take the initative to get it before... i suggest getting it before seeing how many company's may offer incentives for guards who are ready to work right away.

with the new legislation for security guards and private investigators the industry should gradually get better in terms of rate of pay and benifits.

take it from me, it can be pretty easy landing a security job and once you do get hired you will always be in demand
