I had a friend who didn't drink and gave him similar advice to what you just post.Plus you could always have a glass of water and tell people your drinking vodka.

Way to be a fun killer.
When she asked you "Do you want to leave early?"
You say "No, i'm cool, its your BEST friends birthday, you should have fun." And then you ask for a beer and just hold it for the rest of the night.
Also did she make an effort to introduce you to her friends and talk about stuff?

I've been in situations where i'm the guy who no one knows and in that position you have to be outgoing. And your girl has to be cool and introduce you to people. Usually the people who'll talk to you and be cool are your girl's girlfriends. Even though you're meeting them for the first time they probably talk about you, and so they know about you.
If you're on the opposite side, you know everybody and there's one dude who's a fun killer, everyone will tell your girl she needs to ditch you quick. Nobody likes to have Mr. No fun around, especially for birthdays.
