Did you think the Japanese were in any way racist towards you due to your background?

Why would I speak Cantonese? I am from Taiwan.

Actually I worked before many years with many people from Hong Kong and listened to them speak Cantonese a lot so I can understand but I can't speak it.

They hold a lot of prejudices about other Asians, especially Chinese (incl Taiwan) and Koreans. They constantly say things about having to watch your belongings when there are Chinese and Koreans around and things like that, just wondered what they would think about working with other Asians.

I have never felt that way or heard anyone say that about Taiwan. Taiwan isn't a poor and dirty country like China.

I heard lots of Chinese people say those sorts of stories about the Japanese. One guy in China left 4 laptops he had bought in Japan on a Japanese train by accident, and when he went to the station the following day to see about them, they were still there and the Japanese station manager told him that if this was China they would have been gone. This is the attitude a lot of Japanese people have towards other Asians, including Taiwan. I dont know why, they have an inbuilt superiority complex in a lot of cases.

It's not unique to Japan. Americans think the USA is the best, most people I knew in Panama thought Mexicans were lazy, and most Taiwanese people I know don't care for China. Everyone compares themselves to others.

Taiwan is totally different than China. Taiwan is a highly developed country with a high standard of living like the US and Japan. Taiwanese students are always ranking top in the world in math and science. And there is a big Japanese influence in Taiwanese culture. If some Japanese people look down on Taiwan, I think it's probably in the same way some Americans feel our country is superior to Canada or the UK, not like we look down on Mexico.
