This is coming from someone who has studied acting for years. This movie got a standing O and this was a tough getto new york crowd I saw it with, packed house they cheer everytime he came on screen. Just an amazing job, to bad he lost his life so soon.
This is what you have to think about when comparing the two. If you've ever read comics...think about how the Joker was drawn and written in the 80's when the first Batman movie came out. Now think about how the comics are now...
That's the difference between the two. Both amazing in their own separate ways.
I do think Ledger gets at least an Oscar nod for it. Hopefully a statue.
Really, I said it in the other Dark Knight thread, I was kind of underwhelmed with Leder's performance. I thought he was a much better actor in the movie Candy, and I believe if he was not deceased there would not be so much talk. Although he is dead so there is no way to prove my theory wrong or right. Regardless I thought he did a fine job but to say he was the best actor in that film I would say is stretching it. Just my 2 cents.

I don't think Nicholson was asked to do a "criminally insane" joker. If he was, he would have added a little "Shining" to the role.
thats a good point. Jack Torrence was one of the most evil charcters in cinematic history. very different takes on the Joker, but i have to say Ledger's was much more "villain"
