Guitar Influences

So recently I've been actually focusing on trying to broaden the spectrum in which I view music. I've always been interested in blues and that's really where I'm comfortable but I have been looking at various traditions and styles of music such as flamenco, jazz and as of right now a lot of fingerpicking style.

My influences are broad. I am probably the most amazed by Tommy Emmanuel right now because of his ungodly speed and timing. Chet Atkins because of his songs, I like popular guitar professionals like Trace Bundy perhaps because tapping is something I'm interested in.

That Andy Mckee fella is rather new to me, and I think that his music is fantastic as well.

Who are some of your influences? And what styles do you guys play?

I don't play yet, but Django Reinhardt's a favourite of mine. He could only use his thumb and first two fingers of his left hand which made what he came out with even more incredible.

The Andy Mckee, Tommy E. style is called ''chord melody'' playing. It's a style that focuses on incorporating all aspects of a song within a single guitar part. There's a lot of great fellas who do this, so I'm sure if you can find lots of stuff on it if you google it. In this style, Art Renshaw and Lenny Breau are the best, IMO.

I hate guitar now because of the fad it's become so I've moved onto other instruments, but when I played my diet consisted basically of chord melody players, mostly because I dislike playing with other people and girls dig it when you can play every part of a song at once. So, a google on ''chord melody'' playing/players should set you on your way.

I think guitar has always been popular. Especially when ****l crashed onto the scene. Not that there's anything wrong with shredding or anything.

I like Andy Mckee, and his Rylynn is just a fantastic melody. I've heard that Tommy E. would use a thumb pick for the top three strings and just use the rest of his fingers on the treble strings while using a continuous bass line with his thumb. There's another guy that does this as well and I can't think of his name.

Also, (and you guys might really think this is teh gay) but I really like John Mayers music especially his new cd. It's become less pop and more blues and jazz oriented. Although I liked his first cd, the songs seemed to follow the same chord progressions (albeit they all sounded different) and are kind of the same. Why Georgia and My stupid mouth I believe do this.

I'm not trying to get girls, just become a better musician. I play the blues harp as well so I always have something else to commit to.

fuck man....
i've played guitar for a long time.I can map my life out in which guitar players i idolized and tried to copy and in what order.....you sound exactly the same....just like all my friends who STILL play guitar and have never quit.

You know what....i first started learning by idolizing jimi hendrix.......now years later i can play his shit .almost like i have come full circle. I can appreciate and respect good guitar playing and specific techniques while they're being played as i have learned or am learning the exact same techniques. The rudiments while boring are required to enable you to be as fast and fluid as your idols. I spent alot of time just learning how to shred. The metronome is a most trusted ally. I relate guitar training to Muay thai training as i feelt there are alot of simularities.
john mayers is an unreal guitar player.Check out eric claptons crossroads DVDs if you want some really cool shit.......

And oh yeah...(this probly deserves a thread of its own)....I have friends who use their guitar abilities for the sole purpose of getting girls. I call it busting out the big guns. My one friend has absolutely no shame.....the second he has the opportunity to bust out the big guns he will do it,and sure it works ....some of the time......but i think its kinda stupid....like reciting poetry or something. That sappy shit is so fuckin gay: its like fuckin cryin romeo and juliet shit......i have never specifically used guitar to get girls....but sometimes they find out that you can play and they are impressed.

The big guns, lol. I have had girls think that guitar playing and my vocals is sexy, but I think of that as a plus. They don't know what to think exactly when I bust out the Harmonica. LOL.

I'll check out that Clapton video but I think I may have seen a bit of it on youtube.

I've been playing for about 3 years, but I've only recently started to really focus on it.

hah i see your point... it would definately be harder to impress chicks with a harmonica.

while i don't use guitar to get girls, it has inadvertantly gotten me in the door....so who am i to complain? ....I remember getting to know this dude who played in a popular band.He told me that the reason he started playing guiter was because he was at a party way back when, and the person who threw the party had an electric guitar. He had never even touched an electric and so picked it up just to see....instantly three chicks came up and were like "you play the guitar???!?!?!?!" Haha that is what caused him to start playing!

I have the same views as you do.......I started playing like 6 years ago.....but go really heavy back into it since last christmas. I started off just playing some easy shit when I was younger like ****llica nirvana deftones. but as of late really I really wanted too indulge into blues and rocknroll. I still play mad power chord shit, but as of late i have just been working on wrighting blues riffs by combining scales, and hendrix chords and basic open chords, ect. and have just been learning some jimmy page, hendrix, claptin, ccr, and some other random shit I wana learn.
as of late I have realized that jimmy pages riffs(not the solos) are very simple and easy too play but extreemly creative with in a pentatonic scale. I guess thats what psyodelics do for you.....
PS: I got the blues!lol

My major influences have been Stevie Ray Vaughan and Rivers Cuomo (lead singer/song writer for Weezer). Rivers has written some amazing stuff when you look beyond Weezer's radio hits. Some of his early B sides were absolutely genius.
