True, but Seinfeld also falls under the formulaic category. I'm a huge Seinfeld fan, it's probably my all-time favorite show, but it relied on the endearing faults of the characters in nearly every show. There was anal Jerry who found a minor fault in every woman he dated that cause him to break it off, Kramer's crazy get-rich-quick schemes and general unpredictability, George's unrelenting selfishness, etc. Formulaic does not necessarily equal bad. Having a good formula to begin is what makes a sitcom great, as well as creative writers. Al Bundy always found a new way to insult woman, Archie Bunker a new way to act like the stereotypical bigot, and Fred Sanford a new way to make life difficult for Lamont.

oh yeah it's definitely the same formula as any sitcom, but what made it great to me was each show's theme (or themes) was a strong character like the pick, or whatever, and very often the show was structured extremely well.

Hunter was a total badass, he took it easy on Big John. Only a child would be upset over that.
