Greatest own of all time?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_conquest_of_Peru
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atahualpa
The own part, is when Pizarro, with ~200 men, invites the leader of the Inca to talk, under the condition that he will not be harmed. When the king, Atahualpa, approached, Pizarro sent a friar to talk to him and demand he convert to Christianity and subject himself to Charles I, to which Atahualpa responded:
"Be advised that I, being free, do not have to pay tribute to anyone, nor do I believe there is a king greater than I. However, I will have the pleasure to be the friend of your emperor, since he should be a great prince to send his armies throughout the world. But this Pope does not interest me; much less will I obey him, I being in the kingdom of my father and our religion being good and I and my subjects are happy. However, despite my being a son of Huayna Capac I cannot discuss anything so wise and old. The Christ that you speak of died, the Sun and Moon never die, besides how do you know your god created the world?"
A reasonable response. Pizarro the ambushed the king, mercilessly slaying many of the kings highest councellors (or whatever they called them) and taking the king prisoner. They held the king ransom to his people for enough gold to fill a room ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ransom_Room) with gold, and twice as much silver. Pizarro took the gold and killed Atuhaulpa. The gold was then used to fuel the war machine that would eventually take over most of South America.
So yea, I'd say that was a pretty big own.

Some of the details in the articles are slightly different from the account I gave, which I paraphrased from the book "Guns germs and steel" by Jared Diamond.

I once read a letter drafted by one of the spanish soldiers who was in the fracas. He said the lights from the Incas' lamps were like stars in the sky. He also said the Spanish soldiers were pissing and shitting in their pants (literally said that!) because they were so terrified by the number of soldiers facing them. Atahualpa came with 80,000 soldiers, against 200 Spanish. But they followed orders, and it all worked out.

You think? I don't agree. It wasn't nearly as insulting. 200 vs 80 000 first off. Then to invite the guy in under peaceful terms and ambush him, kidnap him, kill his most coveted advisers, and then hold him ransom. Take the ransom and still kill him. They even told him that if he converted, they would take away his sentence of death, so he did convert. So instead of burning him, they strangled him and then burned him. I don;t think Crispens compares to that.
