Got the wind knocked out of me massively today (rather considerable fail)
I don't know if this is really thread-worthy, but had a pretty interesting experience today/last night.
It was 4.20am, I was soundly asleep, subconsciously looking forward to DREAM 4 which would start at 9am here. Anyway, turns out my cat had stowed away up stairs for the night, usually shut her downstairs at night. So she wakes me up in the usual cat manner of somewhat cute semi-harrassment that cats have a tendency to do. I pick her up, begin taking her downstairs.
Halfway down the stairs, my cat kind of scrambles up over my shoulder, and I lean back, adjusting my balence. Then my foot slips out from underneath me, like stepping on a banana skin, and I go airborn. I lean back in the air and land with all my body weight on one step bang in the middle of my back. I slid down the rest of the stairs, feeling like kind of a prick. I come to a stop sitting on one of the bottom steps and then it hits me that I can't breath at all. I've had the wind knocked out of me before, but never anything like this. In past instances, I'd always been able to get a little air into my lungs and get my breathing going again, but this time my diaphragm was having none of it!
So I sit there as trying to figure out what to do, not moving, waiting for my breathing to hopefully kick in, but like I said, nothing was happening. Then everything started to go dark around the edges, and I thought "ah crap". And I was out.
Woke up gurgling for breath half an hour later, drenched in sweat, back absolutely caining. I tried going back to sleep but my back was just too painful, and was also seeing flashing lights (like when you look at a bright lamp for a while, then look away). Anyway, at 9am DREAM started and everything started feeling much better (until the Sakuraba fight). Somehow, my back has gradually felt better throughout the day, and there isn't even a bruise which is pretty remarkable.
I guess all in all what has stuck with me is what a strange experience it was. Like I said, I've had the wind knocked out of me before, but nowhere near to the point that I actually went unconscious and took a while to wake up. The sensation of being unable to breath to that extent was totally new to me. It wasn't like getting choked when I trained a bit of mma. It was kind of like how I imagine drowning to feel. It's strange being unable to breath to that extent when nothing is physically restricting your airways, it's very alarming. It's not like getting choked out grappling when your tired, and your adrenaline is going a little, and you feel the choke setting in gradually, it feels markedly different and more alarming when you're sat there doing nothing, trying to conserve what little oxygen is in your blood by not moving, and you're completely aware of it, feeling your need to inhale increase, but that breath never coming.
Anyway, all in all, it was a pretty fun experience in retrospect. It was a completely new sensation, and at the very least was interesting to experience.
Just wanted to share and hear if anyone else has had a similar experience.
And the moral of the story? Don't trust cats, I guess. They be out for blood.
