Gander, Godthab and Shannon

I've seen these cities on the InFlight display enough that they seem familiar but I've never been to any of them.

Has anybody actually been to any of these cities? What are they like?

THe display is the little animated plane that travels very slowly across the map on long flights. On flights from the U.S. to Europe it goes up the Canadian coast, off the Greenland coast and then down the British Isles to the mainland. There's not much in that part of the world, so those three cities always pop up.

So what's Gander like?

it's a shithole in the middle of nowhere. i think it was a bigger deal many years ago, but nowadays i just pity anyone that lives there. the only time i ever pass through there is for a giant festival every summer that occurs on the other side of the island.

i found this article on the place, but it really seems to overexaggerate gander's importance nowadays. i forgot though, it did play some importance right after 9/11 when a lot of planes were re-routed to there and the locals volunteered to house and feed the passengers.

edit: here is a good and less biased article on the airport.

(neat, at one point the airport was the largest in the world, and it is an emergency landing area for the space shuttle. you learn something new every day.)

i've been doing some extra reading on the post-9/11 flights rerouted to gander and came across this snopes article.

http://www.snopes.com/rumors/gander.htm

st. john's took in quite a few planes as well, and some passengers were housed in one of the gymnasiums at the university. i still remember walking to class and seeing some poor fella in slippers and a bath robe standing outside the gym having a smoke.
