C'est arrivé près de chez vous (Man Bites Dog) is a satirical 1992 Belgian French language black comedy mockumentary starring Benoît Poelvoorde. It has the dubious honor of being the film permitted in the United States that has been banned in the greatest number of non-U.S. countries.[citation needed] In the film, a crew of filmmakers follow a serial killer recording his crimes and grotesquely candid commentary for a documentary they are producing. At first dispassionate observers, they find themselves caught up in the increasingly chaotic violence. The film is shot in black and white.
Interestingly enough, the film was produced on even less than the proverbial "shoe-string budget" by four student filmmakers. The genesis of the idea came from shooting a documentary without any money. As the filming went on, the students (Remy Belvaux and company) were able to garner a bit more support and ultimately find a distributor.
A literal English rendering of the title would be It Happened Close to You, taken from the former title of the local daily news report in Belgian newspaper Le Soir. The film was released in North America as Man Bites Dog.
Because of the timeless plot "Les Ripoux" remains one of my favourite comedies. The performance of all actors is excellent, but Noiret and Lhermitte are brilliant. A good story and an absolute reasonable scenery make this movie a pearl, towering miles above for example the usual Hollywood fast-food. Claude Zidi is not known for deep sophisticated dramas and "Le Ripoux" is also not falling in this category but believe me, the movie IS clever in a certain way. If your heart is with the little people and you never saw this movie, try to watch it soon because afterwards you will want the sequel as bad as the boss wants his medicine (would be too big a spoiler if I'd tell you what this is about). I can't wait to get all 3 DVD's. 10 thumbs up for this fantastic movie.
