finding a job

Whats up guys? For you working stiffs out there I was just wondering how you guys found your jobs. I have a degree in computer engineering (I graduated college at the end of 2004) and still have yet to find full time work. I've tried monster and hotjobs but that hasn't really been working. I figure the companies on there get thousands of resumes sent in for each position and its kind of hard to distinguish myself there. Any advice?

I seriously want to move to Los Angeles now to try a different market. Are there any big staffing firms down there tthat you guys know of? I currently live in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Sorry, I don't know of any firms. If you are desperate you could always try a different State.
I live in the LA area and my cousin was in a similar situation as you. He found a great job out in Denver, so if you are willing to relocate then you might want to try farther away.

also you can try Craigs list, for L.A. I dunno if apple one is more San Diego based or what. Maybe someone from the LA area can help. Np man, I wish you luck, being unemployeed sucks. i'll try to shoot an e-mail to an old training partner that does programming in the irvine area and see if she knows anything, no promises though, she's new to the area.

Yea it does suck. at least I'm still living with my parents. I don't have to pay rent but I have to live under their rules which sucks. I'm 24 and I'm really feeling the pressure of getting my career going.

good jobs are all about connections, people that can get you in. or else you're just another sucker waiting in line.

Thats true it is really hard to try to find a job specially if you are a guy around 20's. If you a girl that is a totally different story, old horny man are always willing to hire them. Anyways the point is, it is way easier if you have connections, God knows how many times I have fill in applications, send in resumes, and job interview and found nothingl..

I started off as a programmer and company went bankrupt and I was unemployed for almost 2 years. My suggestion to you is to do what I did, move to the Business Intelligence side of the industry. 1000's of jobs listed and not nearly enough people to fill them. The pay is excellent too, I make way more money than I did as a programmer plus I find consulting more fun. Travel can be a bitch at times but oh well.

Google BI software, then search dice.com on some of those companies that appear.

Cheers and good luck

Thanks for the responses guys.

Wuchi I've tried having people I know get me into their companies up where I live with no luck and it pisses me off.

estemachine, I too have filled out thousands of applications with no luck. I just feel like I've wasted hours of my time doing this crap.

rolinbud, thanks for the suggestion. I never knew about this. I've been applying for accounting jobs online since I have experience in that but I haven't had any luck there as companies would rather hire someone with a degree in accounting than me. Guess I was applying in the wrong place. Did you have to change your resume for these Business Intelligence jobs? I have a technical resume as I don't have much business experience besides that one job.
