Final Fantasy freaks/buffs

Need to ask a question of the Final Fantasy experts out here...

After Final Fantasy VII, are 8 and/or 9 worth the effort? I've got X and X-2 waiting for me to play but thought I would start at 7.

Obviously... however...

Do 8 or 9 have any relation to 7 ... or just off shoots like some others I've seen?

X-2 is garbage.

8 and 9 are definitely worth playing, but few games in the series compare to 6 and 7. 10 is very good though.

None of the games have anything to do with each other save for recurring names for characters (ie Wedge/Biggs, Cid, etc)... or at least none of them used to have anything to do with each other, until they started making sequels for everything.

The best two games IMO are 6 and 7, although if you weren't gaming back when 6 was released you'll probably have a hard time adjusting to its old-schoolness. 7 is a masterpiece and possibly the best RPG ever.

I watched my girl play some of X-2 and outside of Rikku's shakira-esque gyrations to the theme music... it looked so so.

Was curious about 8 and 9 because I've got a chance to buy them and wondered if they were worth the effort.

Absolutely they are. 8 has a very good story but the gameplay is somewhat lacking. I hated the junction/draw/gf system with a passion but the storyline had me so addicted I finsihed it anyway. 9 I didn't like much at all. The characters and storyline were both too kiddy for me. I wasn't impressed by it, but the old school type gameplay drew me in. Pretty much the opposite of the experience of FF8, who's characters were so interesting and drew me in but battle system pushed me away.

And yes I am a huge RPG nerd. lol

I would say that they are definately worth playing, 9 is quite good, has a few memorable scenes, good story, good ability system and diverse characters. 8 was good, but i didnt enjoy it as much as 7 or 9.

LOL, i felt the characters in 8 were too mature, but intruiging.

I really, really hope they remake the game for the PS3. I'd buy 3 copies just because they did it.
