engineering job hunting advice: call backs

I applying for entry-level chemical engineering jobs. Usually, a week after I turned in my application, I call back to tell them I am following up on the status of my application and to answer any questions they may have. Most have told me that it's been sent and is being reviewed. After that, I have not heard anything. For some jobs, its been 2 weeks since my follow up call.

2 questions:
-Does my first follow up call seem alright?
-Should I do another follow up call for those who have not responded to me even long after my first follow up call? I mean, the job qualification said 'entry-level, B.S. Chemical engineering required', I seem to fit that bill perfectly.

Man, this is so stressful, its my future!!!

I've noticed that when someone is interested in your profile, they won't let you go just because you didn't show your interest by calling them, they will call you back.
That being said, move along, find other companies, it's a numbers game.

The first follow up is always recommended. It shows your interest and maybe they will actually look at your resume. If its been a month or more after your first follow up you can try another follow up call.

Try to a follow up call once a week. It shows that you're interested in their company. Also don't just apply to one company but apply to as many companies as you can, play the game of chance and probability.

Did you send a follow-up letter thanking them and whatnot?

No follow up letter, I didn't even know those things existed.

Some people may or may not like them.

I like to send them because it takes more time/effort to send a letter as opposed to an email/phone call. I think ANY communication is better than no communication.

Where are you looking for a job at? I know our engineering program (University of Louisville) we have a mandatory year co-op experience before we can graduate. Go to your co-op / job office to help you out with the entire interview process.

Call them back the number of times equivalent to Avogadro's Number per day.

This kind of futile procedures are not necessary if the recruiter is a fellow engineer, but it might be important if the recruiters are "pro" HR people, since they don't know any better.
