According to analysts, the start of 2008 was supposed to be the start of the PS3 lead....but it did not turn out that way.

It's not a matter of people that own a X360, buying a PS3 as their second console, but of Wii owners picking either the X360/PS3 at this point. If someone has a X360, many are not really in the market for a PS3, the same can be said about PS3 owners.

It still comes down to games and I still think that for the rest of 2008, the X360 has the edge (Gears 2 will be huge this holiday), but if you are a PS3 owner you will have plenty of good games this year also.

I always like to see Nintendo do well (and they are doing very well), but it seems like that the Wii is pushing the gaming industry into a casual zone. The Wiimote, Wii Fit and all that good stuff was innovative and unique, but I'm a graphics and gameplay whore (it might be just me, but I don't want to see last gens graphics, physics, etc., this gen), I want developers to push graphics and physics to the limit with each game they create. The success of the Wii does not really give developers an incentive to push gaming capabilities to the limit, because mainly the console can't and because developers know they can make a profit off of a half ass game that has a good gimmick and hype behind it.

It's good to see Halo 3, Gears, CoD 4 and GTA 4 do well financially, I wish MGS 4, Gears 2, Spore, Resistance 2, Little Big Planet, Too Human, etc., the same success, so gaming evolution can continue and not stay stagnent for the casual market.

A bunch of mario kiddy crap on the wii....FPS bonanzas on the PS3 and XBOX 360. No, I don't care for them.

I have a 360 and the only game I have or care about right now is Oblivion. Still waiting for a good fighter, RPG, or action-RPG like Prince of Persia or GoW.

Many consumer electronics outlets (cnet, wired, etc) recommend the PS3 as the only Blu-Ray that is worth buying because it is the only one capable of updating its firmware to new blu-Ray standards. I think that alone will drive the ps3's sales.

I think casual gaming the going to be the core to each consoles marketability. Hard-core gamers are going to buy their system of choice (or multiple systems). Look how the wii has sold, not to mention Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Even the 360 has a new homebrew games section on Live. Sony is developing their own "wiimote". I like casual games because they are a good break from intense games. and they are more fun to play with friends (not the online sort).

The other amazing thing to me is that despite the economy in the US, both hardware and software sales are higher than ever. In MARCH, the three consoles sold more than or close to what they sold in December IIRC. Crazy.

I don't think it is just the Wii, and I don't think it is all of gaming.

PC games are being created to sway casuals as well independent of Big N. The industry wants to make money and big blockbusters are becoming too expensive to make the big profits.

That being said, the hardcore fans drive the market so I don't think the new casual direction applies to all of gaming. Despite getting more expensive, the big studios will continue to create big games because they cause hype and sell systems.

from what i been reading by the middle-end of 2009 ps3 will have caught up to the 360 and surpass it soon after.

either way ps3 will surpass the 360 since sony plans on making it a 10 year console while MS will most likely release a new console at least a year before ps4 comes out.

X360: 19 million Xbox 360
PS3: 12.81 million PlayStation 3

The PS3 is a little over 6 million consoles behind, that means the PS3 would have to outsell the X360 by 500,000 units each month for a year to catch up, which is doubtful.

I would expect to see a new Xbox in 2011 or 2012....Sony might release the PS4 around the same time, but they'll support the PS3 until 2016 or beyond.
