Connecting laptop to television monitor?

I was reminded by another guy's thread here in the Mayberry asking about using a television for computer monitor and suggestions and such, now I was hoping for some help on kinda the same topic (but not really....)

My thing is, I wanna hook up my laptop to my television monitor, just to use it for regular computer use nothing special just wouldn't mind a larger screen and the television is definitely that mainly I think for my online poker needs to have more room for more tables at one time. So a friend of mine told me I would need an s-video cable in order to hook up the laptop to the television monitor and that would work. Well I bought an S-Video cable and I got nothing when I hooked the two together. So I was just wondering is there something I am missing? Maybe not compatible? Or does anyone know, am I just stupid(likely scenario)?

HP Pavilion dv9900 Entertainment Notebook PC series Home & Home Office

Thats my laptop

Sony Style Canada

Thats my television

So, I don't know its probably just me being stupid, but any help is appreciated.

There should be a key combo to get the signal to display on your TV. On some laptops, it's like FN and F8

That could very well be it, cause well F8 appears to have a tv out picture (or what I would assume to be one) on it. Man that was pretty simple.......

Thank you very much for your help, if this is the right way +10 internet points to you good sir.

u can use the s-video input, but if i'm not mistaken s-video only carries picture and not audio. U can get a seperate 1/8' headphone to rca cable to add audio. Same goes with a vga, picture no audio.

As stated earlier, when u connect a laptop to a seperate monitor/projector, u usually have to send a command which is usually Function+F8 or Function+F4, depending on laptop. Easiest way is as u already noticed, there's usually a little tv icon on F(whatever) button.

Hi,

I hope what I'm going to write applies, since it works for a desktop. After properly connecting the cables, reboot your laptop. Once it's fully started, go to your settings of the video adapter(configuration-display properties). When there, click the "advanced" tab. You'll then get a window with several tabs (general, adapter, monitor, troubleshoot, color management and the name of your video adapter, in your case NVIDIA GeForce) Click on the tab with "NVIDIA GeForce" written on it. Here you can edit settings. The key is to find the "nview display mode" option in a seperate menu you can acces by clicking a certain button (green with an arrow). Right now you should be able to click "detect displays" to make sure that the TV is found. Then you should click on "clone" as the nview display mode. Click apply and it should work. In my case, the channel used is the TV/AV channel.
Pictures of the process are here, but the explanation is in dutch.....
WeetHet - Video - PC aansluiten op de TV - de nVidia software
good luck.

Your laptop needs an OUTPUT VGA or S-VIDEO. It's not gonna work if it only has those inputs.

Ive been using my 60" tv for 2 years now and i can never go back to sitting at a fuckin desk like most of you suckers. Its so simple, all you need is an S video, audio and video output. Thats it. My fn+f8 doesnt work anymore so i just right click graphics option>output to>dual display online>television + notebook

You ll need a wireless keyboard and mouse and you can chill on your couch with your feet up like me. When i get my next apartment, im getting a projector screen. 10 feet of visual websurfing, cant wait.
