Carrying a pocket knife in CA?

Is it illegal to carry a pocket knife with a locking blade in California?
I'll be traveling to Long Beach for a trade show in a couple of weeks and was curious if it's koser?
I carry a knife just like this:

if you're 18, and the blade doesnt past the width of your four fingers. you should be cool.

if anything the popo will just take it away. no big deal. just say you have it for fishing.

That works for me. If the popos swipe it, I'll be sending you the bill

Not sure about the "locking blade" thing. I think the law states an individual may carry a "common pocket knife" on his person. Not sure if the locking blade would keep it from being a "common" pocket knife. Is the knife spring loaded? Also, it would be wise IMHO to look into the counties stand on open carry vs concealed carry. It seems to differ from county to county. The whole "width of your hand" thing is misinformation.

Is that 4 fingers/palm thing true? I also heard you have to have it showing, so if its got a clip, hook it on your pants or if you have a case use that.

I carry one around when I got downtown sometimes.

I remember asking a cop about it a while back and he said it was cool, but like I said, it was a long time ago.

From my experience, it's always a terrible idea to ask legal advice on a public message board unless it's a board by and for cops and/or lawyers.

Why do you need to carry a knife?

Yeah, it's on a clip and does have a "spring loaded" blade, sorta. I can open it by pushing down on the stud on the bottom of of the blade. The blade really isn't "spring loaded" by has an "assisted opening" torsion spring. It sure open quickly though!
