Seems like an awful lot of commitment for a low wage job. I'm doing it more for change of scenery to get my blood flowing than to find a legitimate worthwhile job.

I go to school around 11am to sometime in the afternoon, train MMA 5-9ish, and after that, I generally just dick around at home or go out and waste time with friends.
Some questions
-Do you have to be 21 to bounce at a club that serves alcohol? How about places that don't serve alcohol like strip clubs? I live in California and I'm 20.
-How big do you generally have to be? I'm 6'1" and 235.
-Do I need to do the training and attain a guard card or will a background check be sufficient?
Also, anyone with experience with advice/stories would be greatly helpful.

Whats up bro, i bounce at a club in woodland hills and the security firm i go through requires a guard card. as im pretty sure its required to work security in California. The size doesnt really matter but it sure does help if things go south, just be personable and most of the time you can talk down a situation from boiling over. Always buddy up to people and pass blame off on the management so you dont come off as the bad guy. Any security or bouncer worth his salt can always use his words as his number one tool over his fists but always be ready to protect yourself and your crew if shit meets fan. Remember, you're not paid for what you do but instead for what you might have to do.

Yea, you're not old enough to bounce at a 21 and over nightclub, but I don't see why not in a stripclub.
They don't really judge people by there size but more image (if you have a baby face it probably wont help) and how you fit in with the place.
You will need a guard card for any job that's worth while. It's $60 for the class but it's like$210 total with your livescan and govt fees
I just recently got a 2nd job as a bouncer for alot of the same reasons, and as long as you're dong it for fun and not for the shitty pay... it's worth it

Right, I read that on Wiki as well. The part I am unsure about is whether clubs require you to have the security license. I know for sure that they do require a background check.

Your size is fine for a bar, or maybe a small club.
I do not know about a license in Cali, but for NY I needed to take an 8 hour course and get finger printed, then send all that stuff to the state where they ran me through the FBI computer.
When you do get hired, be nice. It is not about fighting it is about getting paid and going home.

IF you REALLY REALLY NEED THE MONEY then do it... but otherwise dont.. no matter how much MMA you know or train you will get fucked up if you run into the wrong people.. theres no flying armbars or flying guard pulls when there is 5 people trying to bottle you. its not worth it at all man. i know bouncers who have kicked me out before for fuck all getting layed out next week. sometimes u cross the wrong person and they come back with heaps of ppl. not worth doing that shit for like 30 $ per hour.. not worth it at all

You're positive about the 21 and over thing in California? I know some guys/girls that work as waiters/waitresses in places that serve alcohol. Isn't it essentially the same thing?
The fee is a SERIOUS detergent to me right now. An investment of $210 with no guarantee that I will even land a job. Don't I have to constantly renew the card/do more training too?
