anyone think Heroes rips a lot off of The Watchmen?

I've recently started watching Heroes again and the whole thing of old school and new school heroes reminds me a lot of The Watchmen. In fact, a lot of the themes and motifs remind me a lot of The Watchmen, minus the crazy costumes.

So, is Heroes a rip off, or is it just influenced by The Watchmen?

It´s heavily influenced by Watchmen, but IMO moreso by J. Michael Straczynski. Rising Stars franchise, which is well worth a look:

I thought I read in a magazine that the creator of Heros knows nothing about comics or superheros.

I've never seent he show and the guy could be bullshitting.

Tim Kring the creator may not have been involved in comics before, but co-executive producer Jeph Loeb most certainly has intimate knowledge of comics, having won three Eisner Awards(the comics Oscar) for his work with Marvel and DC Comics.

clearly Heroes is influenced by Watchmen as well as by later comic works that were themselves influenced by Watchmen/Alan Moore.

let's face it, if you are talking about anything that has happened with superheroes for the past 20+ years, then it's probably been influenced by watchmen.

it should be noted that the idea of a superwealthy madman orchestrating a disaster for the purpose of uniting and saving the world is not original to Alan Moore. For one thing, there is Kurt Vonnegut's Sirens of Titan, which was a huge influence on Watchmen (as was Slaughterhouse 5). And even before Vonnegut there were one or two episodes of The Outer Limits that had to do wioth the same basic plot.
