Anyone teach English abroad?

Simple thread - thinking about travelling... thought that if I decided to spend a bit of time away from the UK, this could have job potential. I'd be specifically interested to hear about any exams etc that are needed for this, and if you need them before leaving or if you can pick them up whilst away.

Ta.

where you want to go? each country has its own rules . but if you are a native english speaker . you dont need a massive amount of tests . you just get a curriculum and say . i wanna teach pronto . and pretty much its a done deal

In China, if you want a halfway decent job, you need a Bachelor's and a bit of training, like this TEFL International

They usually will help to place you in jobs, and it's a pretty basic thing if you're really into it.

There have been numerous threads on this. Look for one about teaching English in Taiwan.

For Latin America, they usually prefer ESL certificate courses such as the Trinity College TESOL course and the Cambridge course (offered at many locations now).

For Asian, advanced degrees are preferred, though not necessarily in ESL.

Read this book for an in depth look at national requirements, certifications, and specific schools:
Amazon.com: Teaching English Abroad, 8th (Teaching English Abroad): Susan Griffith: Books

And Dave's ESL forum is world renowned for ESL information. It has just about everything from it's own forums for each country, forums for teachers and forums for students. It also has sample lessons and English info for students and teachers.

To answer your question, you can get certified whilst away and it might even be cheaper, but you will need money to live on while you certify and you might need to return home in some cases to get a work visa (laws vary).

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm from the UK, and I'd probably think about another EU country, so that means very few Visa problems I hope.

I'll check out the ESL cafe. Thanks.

My mom taught English and ESL, and taught other teachers how to teach. She's retired now but goes to Vietnam for a few weeks in the summer to teach teachers how to teach English. She loves meeting the people, teaching, making new friends, and learning about the culture.

I hear that the pay isn't good in Spain so you would be hard pressed to even earn enough to live on. Happy Boy (a poster on here) has been teaching English in Japan for the past year or so and he is Irish. You should send him a PM if you are thinking about Japan.

I am looking into teaching in Korea at the moment. The pay is better in Korea than Spain, for example, and the cost of living far lower.

I'm going to try Korea also. I've been in Japan for a few months now and I'm about done with Japan.
