In reality your best bet is to work harder than those who are smarter.

From personal experience, I can say that the more you think the brighter you're. There are some summers that I didn't do anything except playing video games and sleep and I was dumb as a rock. I could barely speaking proper English.

Do crossword puzzles.

Read books.

Have good cardio vascular health.

Make sure your diet is healthy.

I think those are probably the best ways to start getting smarter.

I didn't read all that was written before me, but here are my thoughts:

There are different kinds of intelligence and how they can be measured accurately (if at all) is another topic of discussion:

The main points I see among friends and others who are intelligent are
1) Family and friends who value intelligence
2) Desire to learn on the part of the one trying to learn
3) Some repetition but more importantly is exercises and teaching what you've learned to others to solidify it
4) critical thinking and applying the skills etc in other areas
5) reading lots of different kinds of things
6) healthy mind = healthy body (positivity, nourishment, rest, exercise, good relationships with friends, family and significant others).

no one needs any pills or supplements if they eat good and follow the other guidelines for general health and well being, pills create lazy people who don't want to eat correctly or rest or whatever other imbalance they might have

This is correct. Intelligence is nothing more than the ability to solve problems. Without actual problems to work through, you don't flex this ability. And then it goes away!

What also helps in boosting brainpower? Physical fitness. Eat right and exercise.

I actually felt smarter after I was out of high school for a few years. I think it had something to do with the fact that I stopped smoking pot in my early 20's. I know many smart people who blaze, but it seemed to keep me from retaining knowledge.

It sounds stupid, but I listened to a lot of talk radio shows and kept updated on the news and current events. I read books, magazines and internet articles when time permits and try to expand my vocabulary whenever possible. Many people who know me are shocked when they discover I never went to college.
