Anyone an EMT

I'm a student right now, and my goal is to be an Accounting major. But, I like to try new and different things. So I talked to a girl in my class and she said she's a certified EMT... This got me interested not because I want to do it as a career but because I want to have the ability to save lives.

So I was just thinking, what's the most basic EMT certification program. I'm in California. What are the classes like? How long does it take to get certified? Is there any work involving EMT I can do on the side?

I'm basically asking what it takes to get the most basic EMT degree. All I know is that you need to become CPR certified, and right now I'm trying to fit a CPR certification class into my schedule.

I worked as an EMT for about a year on an ambulance in southern California.

The schooling is about six months long. It consists of a lot of material but it's not too bad. If you are interested in saving lives and not actually working as an EMT, I would instead recommend getting your first responders certification instead.

Most of the EMT schooling is taught to people who will be actually working as EMT's with the proper equipment and for scenarios that you would never encounter as joe blow walking down the street.

I'm an EMT Basic (the most basic EMT cert). I'm going for Intermediate right now. It's not my job, just a side line thing, but it is very cool and interesting. However, EMTs make jack shit fo money, and Basics can't really do a whole lot.
