My uncle owns his own company and makes bank. I think he pays his starting workers 22 a hour.

I make 40 an hour on most jobs, own property in the Caribbean, and work when I want to.
Earned my journeyman electrician's papers back in NY, the apprenticeship requires 8000 hours logged on the job, under qualified journeyman (with a legit sponsor) and 4 year related instruction at a university.
Takes about 5 years but you can do it faster if youre uber-aggressive.
Looking at taking the master electrician's exam down here but our house needs lots of work so ive been putting of the studying.
I highly recommend the trade.

The trade isnt physically challenging as much as it is mentally. Coming up with cost effective solutions for customers, adhering to safe and reliable practices at all times. The job can be hazardous if workers are less than knowledgeable.
IEBW is great if you dont mind paying union dues and being piss tested.

Insurance is very expensive, liability specifically.
