I just read in one of my parenting magazines (go ahead and chuckle) and they said to use a vinegar/water solution where ants could get into your home. I'm not sure if the vinegar would hurt plant-life, but it might be worth a shot.

Ok apparently what I was talking about is caustic soda, and even though it comes in the powder form I saw this in a rock form many years ago, but after seen a video on youtube it seems to have the same effect.
