lol
I almost tried that the other day. No kidding.
They are all over the place though. I'd say there are 4-5 good size ant hills out there.
They're tough little bastards. I've been trying to kill them for a couple of years now and they just spread out a little more every year.

What kinda fruit?
Also, as long as you can prove that it wont get attacked by other animals (such as dogs) or wont be able to escape (gate), you can rent a couple of anteater (a male and a female) in some states for $80-$100/day. Be aware that if you lose them or they get injured/killed, you might have to pay up to $2.5k per animal though. Those things are expensive.
A couple of anteaters (must be m/f) have been known to clean up fairly big places such as hotels/motels, smaller schools (etc) in 3 days or less.

any harsh chemical would kill ants, but would likely damage or kill your tree as well.
ant chalk is relatively cheap:
ant chalk - Google Product Search
I got the shit from chinatown, so I cant guarantee it's the same as those above. You draw a line, and that's the barrier.
bad side is that I have encountered dud chalk that does not work at all. I have a certain amount of good chalk and I dont share with anyone. Shit is a miracle worker.

Seano:
Get one of those football field chalk things and roll over the ant hills with the chalk and run the line out to the drive way or further.
SEe if that works.
Then basically hose the ant hills just to make sure.

Well according to google you can't rent them in NY, VT, GA and CA because it's illegal to rent an animal there. Not sure why.
