I hate black-list technologies like anti-virus that provide the illusion of security but do nothing to stop the long-term problem.

Avast, Trendmicro.

Both free and reasonably effective.

For me, something called Antivirus Xpro 2008 or something like that all of a sudden installed intself and is telling me my computer's infected like crazy and I need to register for it to clear. My screen saver disappeared and all of my desktop icons disappeared and the only way I can access them is by bringing up the task window. I've tried uninstalling the new Antivirus thing but it won't listen to me.

I've got Norton running a full system scan now but on the surface it doesn't seem like anything's wrong but clearly something is.

I'm on my laptop now and it works fine but my desktop is seriously under fire.
It's telling me I need to turn on windows update... but it IS on. So I have the big red 'X' on the toolbar all day telling me something is out of whack. It's just annoying...

kaspersky hides it's total ram usage among svchost.exe

it still has the lowest ram usage along with nod32 though

Internet Security (Kaspersky, Zonealarm or whichever company) sucks because they are a combination of Firewall and Anti Virus and are weak at both because of the combination.

Zonealarm specializes in firewall but not anti virus protection.

Kaspersky specializes in anti virus protection but not firewall.

When either company combines their specialty with something outside of their specialty they have a watered down version of their specialty combined with something they are not good at.

Anderson Silva would lose in a straight up boxing match against Roy Jones Jr because RJJ specializes in that one aspect.

So to get the best of both worlds, use Zonealarm Firewall and Kaspersky Anti Virus the standalone versions and not the Internet Security.

You just have to configure them to work together. In the case of Zonealarm and Kaspersky, just turn off the spyware protection in the Zonealarm firewall so that it doesn't conflict with Kaspersky since Kaspersky anti virus also protects from spyware, trojans etc.

Zonealarm Firewall + Kaspersky Anti Virus > Zonealarm Internet Security OR Kaspersky Internet Security

I've used Avast and Avira with minimal problems (not virus-related).
