Avast has worked well for me also, it did try to cockblock once though. It was my first date with this girl and I brought her back to my place. We were making out on my bed when all of sudden my speakers boom at us "VIRUS DATABASE HAS BEEN UPDATED" ( I was listening to music while I was getting ready so they were set pretty loud). Kinda killed the mood for a second when she almost fell off the bed in a wtf moment.

You pretty much can't go wrong with any of the more 'popular' anti-virus programs...

AVG - Free, worked good for me in the past.
Avast - Free & 3yr Family Professional version w/ updates is a bargain (allows up to 10 client computers & 1 WHS version)
Kaspersky - This one seems to be the most liked by uber-tech geeks, but pro version is a little expensive (Kaspersky has offices in several countries around the world, inc. those that tend to 'produce' the most viruses)
McAfee - Works good, expensive, and most consider it a little bloated (slows down your computer a little more than most)
Norton - see McAfee

Norton sucks and it slows down your computer because it is too heavy on resources.

I've tested several anti virus software on a friend's infected computer and Kaspersky is the best. The only one I didn't try was Bit Defender but I heard that one is good too.

Norton does not detect a lot of the viruses. After running Norton (and a bunch of others) I ran Kaspersky and it detected viruses that the others couldn't.

Kaspersky Anti Virus (not Internet Security cuz anything Internet Security is garbage) is light on resources and updates like hourly or something so you're always up to date against the latest threats.

I use Kaspersky Internet Security and it is using exactly 10 megs of ram right now.
